Dr Lucy Smith is a Principal Researcher for the Circular Economy Group at the Materials Processing Institute, where she leads on projects relating to resource
efficiency, sustainability, and material recovery from waste. She is a member of the recently formed Transforming Industries Future Leaders Group and represents
the Institute at a range of external Working Groups.
Lucy recently completed an EPSRC Post-Doctoral Prize Fellowship at the University of Sheffield where she developed and applied a decision-making tool to
determine the sustainability of materials to aid product design and international policy. During her PhD, Lucy’s research also focused on the life cycle assessment of
functional materials and their associated devices, such as capacitors, fuel cells and batteries. Through cross-disciplinary research and industrial and academic
collaboration, her research enabled the development and application of robust sustainability quantification strategies paving the way for industrial symbiosis, a
circular economy and global sustainability.
Lucy is an expert in material sustainability, circular economy and life cycle assessment and has studied the environmental, economic, and social impacts of a range
of products including steel and electric vehicle battery technologies.
Lucy also has a background in the steel and cement industries where she was an Environmental Manager for 5 years after finishing her degree in Materials
Engineering from Loughborough University.
