TFI Network+ Co-Director Professor Susan Bernal Lopez awarded 2021 Kavli Foundation Early Career Lectureship in Material Science

Transforming Foundation Industries Network+ Co-Director Professor Susan Bernal Lopez has been awarded the prestigious Kavli Foundation early career lectureship in materials science by the Materials Research Society.

The award recognises significant novel contributions to materials science by researchers in their early career.

As part of the award, Susan will be presenting ‘Cementing a Low-Carbon Future Infrastructureat the virtual 2021 MRS Fall Meeting and Exhibition on Tuesday 7th December. Susan will be discussing low-carbon infrastructure including an overview of recent advances in novel low carbon cements.

‘I feel very honoured to count myself among the talented people that received this award before me, and I am most grateful to the Materials Research Society and The Kavli Foundation for this award. It highlights the importance of fundamental research in cementitious materials for developing more sustainable and low carbon cements, and also the importance of understanding the interactions between concretes and their in-service environment. I hope this lecture will inspire other materials scientists to realise how fascinating cement materials science can be, and the impact that this research can have in sustainable future infrastructure.

I would like thank the students, researchers, colleagues and collaborators who have supported me over years, as well as my family for their permanent encouragement and love.” – Professor Susan Bernal Lopez, TFI Network+ Co-Director.

Susan is Professor of Structural Materials at the School of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds, focusing on research areas including cement materials characterization, waste management and cement and concrete durability. Susan was previously Research Fellow in Cements at the University of Sheffield and University Academic Fellow in Cementitious Materials at the University of Leeds.

Transforming Foundation Industries Network+ congratulates Susan on this outstanding award and achievement.
