PhD Studentship: Graphene-inorganic matrix composites

This project aims to understand and control the interface between 2D materials and inorganic matrices to tune the properties of the composite. In particular, you will study (1) graphene-copper composites for electrical brushes in wind turbine generators and (2) graphene-SiC composites for high performance bearings. Both of these materials have complex multifunctionalities that require tuning of the graphene-matrix interface to deliver optimal performance and improve energy efficiency.

EPSRC Bragg Centre DTP PhD Studentship: Corrosion of steel reinforcement in low-carbon concretes

This project aims to understand the effect of the intrinsic characteristics of different concretes (e.g., pH, relative humidity, SOx, O2) in the formation mechanisms and characteristics of corrosion oxide films in embedded steel reinforcement concretes. This research project will be conducted in the University of Leeds, and the supervisory team comprises senior academics with expertise in materials science and surface engineering, internationally recognised as world-leading researchers in the design, advanced characterisation and performance assessment of cementitious materials, as well as for corrosion studies of metals for energy and infrastructure applications.

Funded EPSRC DTP PhD Studentship: Life Cycle Assessment of Sustainable Cement

This cross-disciplinary PhD project aims to develop a new material chemistry circularity comparative framework for sustainable cement for construction and energy sectors. It will perform a hybrid life cycle analysis (LCA) of AAC/AEAC produced from both traditional and non-traditional raw materials, in a system defined in space and time, and compare the environmental and economic performance of these low-carbon cements against traditional Portland cement.
